Traces explores the things that remind us of a loved one when they die, through the use of collage. The project consists of 5 collages made for 5 family members in my life who have died, the collages are contained within mini publications for each person. Abstract patterns reflect the visual shapes of these reminders, using a variety of mediums such as stamping, risograph printing and watercolour. Colour played an important role when bringing together elements for collage. After reflecting on the 5 people, I chose colours for each which felt representative of them. The collages contain different textures and are stitched together with embroidery thread; the thread is representative of myself piecing together the memories and reminders of each person. Rough edges are at times exposed in the outer parts of the collages to symbolise my own fragmented memory and portray a snapshot of the person’s life rather than encapsulate their entire personality.
The mini publications are restrained, subtle and quiet to allow for the collages to pull focus and offer space, so that each element of the publication can be considered and heard. The project is both a tribute to my family members but also a process where creativity has been used as catharsis, as a way to process grief.
